Rhode Island has many older homes, and some of the water lines and sewers have been around for many years. Water lines were usually made up of either lead pipe, copper, pvc, or galvanized steel. In the ground, these older water lines are more prone to crack, break, corrode and rust out and as a result the pipewill eventually fail and need to be replaced. Galvanized steel rusts terribly, releasing rust particles into your drinking water. Not to mention that all that rust causes potentially serious leaking issues. causing a serious problem that needs immediate attention.
If your home was built before 1986 you may still have lead pipes or lead soldered joints that can leach into the water at your home or place of business contaminating yourwater supply. You can check with the Environmental Protection Agency regading this issue.
So if your house or business structure is older then sooner or later you will need to replace those lines and when you do just call Dennis Diffley & Sons Inc. for fast service and peace of mind.
Although some leaks can be difficult to detect, there are some common signs which may indicate that you have a leak in
your service line. Some signs of underground leaks include the following things you can look for:
• Unusual wet spots in landscaped areas and/or water pooling on the ground surface.
• An area that is green, moldy, soft, or mossy surrounded by drier conditions.
• A notable drop in water pressure, water flow volume.
• A sudden problem with rusty water, dirt, or air in the water supply (there are other causes for
this besides a leak).
• Heaving or cracking of paved areas.
• Sink holes or potholes in your yard area between your water service entrance and the street.
• Uneven floor grade or leaning of a structure.
• Sudden and unexplained increase in water use, consistently high water use, reflected in your billing cycle.
If you think you may have a leak in your service line, turn off the main shut off valve within your home, or business. Place your ear on the main water line coming into your home. If you have a hissing noise you probably have a leak. You should then contact your local water board to determine if the line needs replacement.
